Moviendo el esqueleto con Play that Funky Music.

Hoy nos acercamos a uno de esos grupos que han pasado a la historia de la música por un único tema. Si bien como veremos a continuación, tienen varios de muy buena calidad, las ventas y el público hacen que sean recordados en la historia de la música por su éxito Play that Funky Music.

El grupo en cuestión se llama Wild Cherry, y su estilo funk enganchó a las masas a mediados de los 70. El nombre del grupo fue tomado de una caja de pastillas para la tos, mientras Robert Parissi, alma mater del grupo, estaba recuperándose de una breve estancia en el hospital.

La canción Play That Funky Music fue escrita en una servilleta de un bar en tan solo 5 minutos, y el origen de su frase más célebre se remonta a una noche durante una pausa, cuando se encontraban reunidos en el camerino, y el batería Ron Beitle, pronunció la frase mágica que con el tiempo se oyó en todo el mundo: «Play That Funky Music White Boy«. Todo ello era una respuesta a una mesa llena de fans negros que se estaban burlando, preguntando: «¿Estos niños blancos van a tocar algo de música funky?».

Como ya hemos comentado Robert Parissi, era el más destacado de sus miembros, que aunque abandonó el grupo, regresó en su etapa más gloriosa. La formación a lo largo de su historia sufrió numerosos cambios.
